COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Community and Youth Work programme provides students with a strong foundation in community development, youth work theory, and professional practice while preparing them to become reflective and socially responsible practitioners. The course begins by exploring the history and development of community and youth work as a profession, with a strong focus on social justice and understanding the challenges faced by young people and communities. Students examine concepts such as identity, community, professionalism, and the relationship between theory and practice, helping them develop confidence and establish their professional identity. The programme introduces theoretical frameworks that enable students to understand and apply different approaches to community and youth work in practical settings. As the course progresses, students critically examine issues of exclusion, inequality, oppression, and social disadvantage, exploring both local and global perspectives and learning how to challenge and resist oppressive practices. Modules in reflexive ethical practice and leadership encourage students to evaluate their own experiences, develop professional values, and build leadership skills based on empowerment, equality, and social change. The programme also emphasises critical thinking, reflection, and professional identity formation, enabling students to understand their role in supporting positive change within communities. Flexible and co-designed learning opportunities allow students to explore topics that match their interests and career aspirations while developing specialist knowledge and transferable skills. In the final stages of the programme, students undertake an independent research project or organisational needs analysis that addresses real issues affecting young people and communities, helping them develop advanced research, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Throughout the course, students combine academic study with extensive professional practice and placement experience, preparing them for careers in youth work, community development, local authorities, charities, voluntary organisations, and other areas of the social sector. Graduates leave the programme with professional knowledge, practical experience, and a strong commitment to social justice and community empowerment.
