COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Childhood Studies programme provides students with a comprehensive understanding of children and young people by examining childhood from social, cultural, historical, and educational perspectives. The course begins by exploring different theories and perspectives on childhood and youth, helping students understand how childhood is socially constructed and how changing ideas about children influence policies and professional practice. Students develop knowledge of child growth and development, including emotional, social, physical, and cognitive development, and examine both traditional and contemporary theories that shape approaches to learning and care. Modules focusing on teaching and learning introduce the development of education systems, curriculum models, and learning theories, including the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage. The programme also encourages students to engage with communities through practical experiences that develop teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills while linking academic knowledge to real-life situations. Students gain research skills by studying research methods, ethics, and literature in childhood studies, preparing them to undertake an independent dissertation in their final year. The course further explores integrated approaches to children's learning, development, and assessment, alongside global perspectives on childhood, examining issues such as poverty, education, health, conflict, and social inequality affecting children worldwide. Advanced modules focus on early intervention during the first three years of childhood, leadership and professional practice within the childhood sector, and the design of spaces that empower and support children and young people. The final-year dissertation allows students to investigate a topic of personal interest and develop advanced research and analytical skills. Optional Early Childhood Graduate Practitioner Competencies modules provide practical experience and professional recognition as an Early Years practitioner at Level 6. Overall, the programme equips graduates with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional understanding required for careers in education, childcare, social care, health services, community organisations, and other areas that support children, young people, and their families.
