ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Sunderland is a public research university in Sunderland, North East England, with additional campuses in London and Hong Kong. It traces its origins to Sunderland Technical College, founded in 1901 as a municipal training institution. The college initially offered courses in subjects such as engineering, chemistry, physics, commerce, and languages, and was notable for pioneering sandwich courses combining academic study with practical training. Over time, it expanded with departments like pharmacy, naval architecture, and mining, and gained recognition from universities such as Durham and London for degree programs. During World War II, it supported the armed forces through specialized training. In 1969, it became Sunderland Polytechnic after merging with the School of Art and Teacher Training College, focusing on applied and vocational education. Following the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, it achieved university status. The institution continued to grow, establishing modern facilities such as media centers and expanding its academic offerings. Leadership and ceremonial traditions evolved, with notable figures including Lord Puttnam, Steve Cram, and Emeli Sandé serving as chancellors. The university also developed its reputation in sports and culture and expanded its graduation ceremonies to larger venues like the Stadium of Light. In 2019, it opened a new medical school as part of a national initiative to increase medical training places. Today, it serves around 21,000 students and continues to emphasize both academic research and practical professional education.
