COURSE CURRICULUM

The Process Safety and Loss Prevention MSc(Eng) equips students with essential knowledge and practical skills to manage risks, prevent accidents, and enhance safety in complex industrial environments. The program covers a comprehensive range of topics, beginning with an introduction to process safety principles and techniques, followed by leadership and management of process safety, which emphasises the integration of safety culture and organisational responsibility. Students gain in-depth understanding of hazards and protections, exploring methods to identify, assess, and control risks across various sectors. Human behaviour and human error are studied to understand the critical role of operator performance in safety management. The course addresses industry-specific process safety, focusing on the chemical, pharmaceutical, fine chemicals, and oil and gas sectors, providing sector-relevant insights and practical applications. Major hazards and emergency planning modules teach students how to prepare for and respond effectively to industrial incidents, while instrumented systems and functional safety offer technical knowledge on automated safety mechanisms. The research project allows students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world problems, developing analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills. Graduates are prepared for careers in process safety, risk management, and loss prevention, capable of managing major hazards and promoting safety excellence in diverse industrial settings.
