COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) MSc is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in spatial data analysis, geospatial technologies, and their practical applications. Core modules in the first stage include Quantitative Analysis, GIScience: Principles and Applications, Foundations of GIS, and GIS and Geovisualisation, which equip students with the essential theoretical knowledge and technical skills for working with spatial data and creating effective visualisations. Advanced Spatial Analysis and The GIS Project further develop analytical capabilities, enabling students to apply GIS methods to complex, real-world problems and conduct independent, applied research. Students also complete a Geospatial Dissertation, which allows for in-depth investigation of a specific topic, integrating theory, technical skills, and practical analysis to produce a substantive piece of research. Optional modules provide opportunities for specialisation, with choices including Managing Climate Change, Spatial Data Science for Social Sciences, The Urban Climate Emergency, Health, Wellbeing and the City, and Urban Heritage and Conservation, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests or career goals. Throughout the program, students gain expertise in geospatial software, spatial data management, and quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques. Graduates emerge with a combination of technical proficiency, analytical skills, and research experience, preparing them for careers in GIS, urban planning, environmental management, policy research, consultancy, and other fields that require advanced spatial data expertise.
