COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Change and International Development MSc combines core and optional modules to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationships between environmental change, development, and social justice. Core modules include Professional Skills for Development, which equips students with practical skills for working in international development contexts, The Science of Environmental Change, which introduces the scientific principles underlying environmental processes, and Ideas and Practice in International Development, which explores key theories, policies, and approaches in the field. Additional core modules such as Environment, Society and Development: Key Issues, Debates and Concepts, and Managing Climate Change provide critical insight into the social, political, and economic dimensions of environmental challenges and their management. Students also choose between Research Foundations with or without Placement, offering practical experience in conducting research in development or environmental contexts. Optional modules allow for further specialisation, with topics including Theory and Debates in Food Security and Food Justice, Epidemiology, Critical Reflections in Global Health, Foundations of GIS, and The Digital Self, as well as field-based modules such as UK-Based Field Class, International Development Field Class, and Urban Informality. Additional options focus on health and policy, including Health Promotion, Public Health Informatics, Communicable Disease Control, and Using Policy to Strengthen Health Systems. Together, these modules equip students with interdisciplinary knowledge, analytical skills, and practical experience necessary to address environmental and development challenges, implement sustainable solutions, and contribute effectively to global development and policy-making.
