COURSE CURRICULUM

The Drug Discovery Science MSc is structured around a combination of core and optional modules that provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for careers in pharmaceutical research and development. Core modules include Statistics and Laboratory Techniques, which equip students with essential quantitative and experimental skills, and Drug Design, Pharmacology & Medicinal Chemistry, providing an understanding of the chemical and biological principles underlying drug development. Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Synthesis focuses on the practical aspects of creating and optimising drug candidates, while Research, Presentation and Professional Skills develops critical abilities in scientific communication, project management, and professional practice. The Drug Discovery Research Project allows students to apply their knowledge in an independent, hands-on research setting, integrating laboratory work and data analysis to solve real-world problems in drug development. In addition, students select 30 credits from optional modules such as The Biotech and Pharmaceutical Industry, Genomic Approaches to Drug Discovery, Cancer Biology, and Chemical Biology, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests and emerging areas within the field. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive foundation in drug discovery science, combining experimental techniques, theoretical knowledge, and research experience, preparing graduates for roles in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, as well as for further academic study and research at the doctoral level.
