COURSE CURRICULUM

The Speech and Language Therapy MMedSci program offers a comprehensive two-year curriculum that integrates academic learning with professional practice. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Biomedical Science, Speech and Hearing Science, and Introduction to Practical Linguistics, gaining an understanding of the biological and linguistic bases of communication. Modules like Speech, Language, Communication and Literacy Development in Children and Developmental Differences in Speech, Language and Communication focus on child language acquisition and disorders, while Language Cognition and Communication in Adults 1 and 2 explore communication challenges arising from neurological and cognitive conditions. Research Methods and Statistics introduces students to evidence-based practice, and Professional Practice 1 with Participation and Society provides initial clinical experience and awareness of social contexts in therapy. In the second year, learning advances to applied and research-focused modules such as Language Analysis: Sound and Structure, Evaluating the Evidence Base in Speech and Language Therapy, and the Clinical Dissertation. Key Clinical Topics 1 and 2 deepen understanding of complex communication disorders, while Professional Practice 2 and 3 and Transition to Professional Autonomy prepare students for independent clinical work. The program ensures graduates are confident, research-informed practitioners ready for professional registration and clinical careers.
