COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA International Development offers a comprehensive understanding of the key issues shaping global development, combining academic theory with practical skills and field experience. Core modules such as Professional Skills for Development and Ideas and Practice in International Development provide students with a strong foundation in development theory, policy, and practice. The program allows for significant flexibility through a range of optional modules covering topics like food security, environmental change, global health, state governance, and the digital self. Students can also study applied subjects such as GIS, climate change management, and urban informality, linking development theory to real-world challenges. Field classes in the UK or abroad offer opportunities to apply learning in professional contexts, enhancing research and problem-solving skills. Modules such as Capitalism and Crisis and Political Economy of Global Environmental Change encourage critical analysis of how economic systems and environmental pressures shape global inequalities. Depending on their career goals, students can choose to complete Research Foundations with or without a placement, enabling them to develop strong analytical and research skills. The course prepares graduates for diverse careers in international development, policy-making, NGOs, sustainability consulting, and humanitarian organisations.
