COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature MA offers a flexible and comprehensive program that allows students to explore literature, film, theatre, and creative writing from the 1400s to the present day. Core modules include Core Skills in Postgraduate Study, which equips students with essential research, analytical, and academic skills, and the Dissertation in English Literature, providing an opportunity for independent, in-depth research on a topic of the student’s choice. The program also offers a wide range of optional modules, enabling students to tailor their studies to specific interests and develop expertise across diverse literary and cultural fields. These options include Romantic Gothic, Shakespearean Transformations, Contemporary Cinemas, and Mid-Century Modernism, as well as thematic and interdisciplinary modules such as Humans, Animals, Monsters and Machines: From Gulliver’s Travels to King Kong, Memory and Trauma in Contemporary Literature, and Feminist Methods in Historical Practice. Students can also engage with creative practice through modules in prose, poetry, and experimental writing, or explore literature in context with modules such as Literature and Language in the Workplace. By combining critical analysis, historical understanding, and creative exploration, the program develops advanced research, writing, and interpretive skills, preparing graduates for careers in academia, publishing, media, cultural organisations, creative industries, or further postgraduate study, while fostering intellectual versatility and cultural insight.
