COURSE CURRICULUM

The Digital Media and Society MA is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the social, cultural, and ethical implications of digital technologies. The program requires completion of 180 credits, including core modules such as Perspectives on Digital Society, Researching Society, Digital Methods, Digital Media in a Datafied Society, Academic Skills and Literacy, and the Dissertation in Digital Media and Society. These modules equip students with the theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical experience needed to analyse the impact of digital media on contemporary society and to conduct independent research projects. In addition, students can choose between 45 and 60 credits from a range of specialist modules, including Visual Methods for Social Scientists, The Digital Self, Information Governance and Ethics, Digital Practices, Mobile Media and Digital Futures, Sociology of Genders, Sexualities and the Bodies, Digital Health, and How the World Gets Made, allowing them to tailor their studies to their specific interests and career goals. A further 15 credits can be selected from guided options, such as Wikipedia and History, Media, State and Society in China, Managing Climate Change, Digital Cultural Heritage: Theory and Practice, and Transnational Feminist Approaches to the Media, among others. Together, these modules provide a rigorous combination of theory, methodology, and applied research, preparing graduates for careers in media, research, policy, advocacy, and digital communications, or for further academic study.
