COURSE CURRICULUM

The Architectural Design MA combines theoretical study with practical, studio-based learning to develop students’ distinctive design approaches and professional skills. Core modules guide students through a structured progression of design work, starting with Live Project 1, which provides hands-on experience in real-world architectural projects, followed by Design Project 1 and Design Project 2, where students explore creative, technical, and conceptual aspects of architectural design. Modules such as Reflections on Architectural Design, Environment and Technology in Design, and Theory and Research in Design encourage critical thinking, research skills, and an understanding of contemporary architectural theory, sustainability, and the technological dimensions of design. The program culminates in the Architectural Design Thesis Project, enabling students to develop an independent, in-depth architectural project that integrates practical, theoretical, and research insights. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, with choices including Conservation and Regeneration Principles and Approaches, Power, Space, Society, Histories and Theories of Urban Design, and Materials for Low Impact Buildings, providing opportunities to specialise in heritage, urbanism, or sustainable design. Through this combination of core and optional modules, students gain technical expertise, creative problem-solving abilities, and professional competencies, preparing them for careers in architecture, urban design, heritage conservation, sustainable building design, or further research in the field.
