COURSE CURRICULUM

The Zoology BSc provides an in-depth study of animals, their behaviour, physiology, and the ecosystems they inhabit, combining theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory and field experience. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in biological principles through core modules including Experimental Skills for Bioscientists, Professional Skills for Bioscientists, Building Blocks of Life, Diversity of Life, and Form and Function of Living Organisms. They explore topics such as evolution, genetics, cell biology, immune responses, animal adaptation, and microbial diversity, while developing essential laboratory techniques, data analysis skills, and professional competencies. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies toward biodiversity, neuroscience, or biochemistry. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of animal diversity, behaviour, ecology, and evolution through core modules such as Animal Diversity, Principles of Animal Behaviour, and Experimental Skills in Zoology and Ecology. Optional modules provide opportunities to study evolutionary biology, conservation, field biology, genomics, and ecosystems, while training in statistical programming and experimental design enhances research skills. The third year focuses on independent research, with students undertaking a substantial project in areas such as laboratory or field studies, bioinformatics, science communication, or education. Field courses and optional modules in advanced topics like evolutionary genetics, conservation, neurobiology, and human genetics enable students to specialise, preparing them for careers in research, conservation, environmental management, and related fields.
