COURSE CURRICULUM

The Theoretical Physics BSc provides an in-depth exploration of the mathematical and physical principles that govern the universe, combining rigorous theory with practical and computational skills. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation through core modules including Fundamental Physics and Mathematics I and II, Investigating Nature: the Physicist’s Toolbox, and Mathematical Modelling, covering topics such as mechanics, waves, thermal physics, electromagnetism, and quantum theory. The second year builds on this knowledge, with modules such as Fundamental Physics and Mathematics III and IV, Differential Equations, and Instrumentation, Data Processing and Python, allowing students to deepen their understanding of physics concepts, enhance analytical and programming skills, and apply mathematical methods to complex physical problems. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project, developing advanced expertise in theoretical physics while gaining experience in research design, problem-solving, and data analysis. Specialist pathways such as Mathematical Physics, Particle and Nuclear Physics, Quantum Technologies, and Computational Physics provide opportunities for tailored study, alongside optional modules including Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Theory and Electrodynamics, Dark Matter and Cosmology, and Machine Learning. Throughout the degree, students cultivate critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and computational proficiency, preparing them for careers in research, technology, scientific computation, finance, and further academic study.
