COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics BSc provides a thorough grounding in the principles and applications of modern physics, combining theory, experimentation, and computation. In the first year, students study the foundations of mechanics, oscillations, waves, thermal physics, electricity, magnetism, and quantum physics through the Fundamental Physics and Mathematics modules. They also develop key experimental and analytical techniques in Investigating Nature: the Physicist’s Toolbox, and choose an optional module such as Frontiers of Physics, Introduction to Astrophysics, or Introduction to Electric and Electronic Circuits. The second year builds on these fundamentals with advanced study in thermal physics, relativity, quantum theory, and electromagnetism, while also strengthening programming and data analysis skills through the Instrumentation, Data Processing and Python module. Optional topics such as modern physics, differential equations, or stars and galaxies allow students to tailor their learning. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project and can specialise through pathways in areas such as particle and nuclear physics, quantum technologies, biophysics, or computational physics. Optional modules including atomic physics, semiconductor photonics, dark matter and cosmology, and quantum mechanics enable further exploration. Throughout the degree, students gain strong problem-solving, research, and technical skills essential for careers in science, technology, and engineering.
