COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics and Astrophysics BSc offers a structured and comprehensive study of the physical laws governing the universe, combining theoretical understanding with practical exploration. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in core topics such as mechanics, oscillations, waves, thermal physics, electricity, magnetism, and quantum physics through the Fundamental Physics and Mathematics modules. They also gain introductory knowledge of astrophysics and develop practical observational skills in Mapping the Night Sky: the Astronomer’s Toolbox. The second year deepens this understanding with advanced studies in thermal physics, special relativity, quantum theory, and electromagnetism, alongside modules like Stars and Galaxies and Observing the Night Sky, which strengthen analytical, programming, and laboratory abilities. By the final year, students focus on specialized areas of physics and astrophysics through modules such as Particle and Atomic Physics, Stellar Atmospheres and Astronomical Spectroscopy, and Dark Matter and Cosmology. A major component of the final year is the Astronomy Project and Skills module, which provides hands-on research experience. Optional modules, including topics like astrobiology, quantum mechanics, and machine learning, allow students to tailor their studies to their interests. Throughout the course, students develop the technical, analytical, and research skills essential for scientific and technological careers.
