COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics BSc is structured over three years to provide a thorough grounding in mathematical theory while allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules including Introduction to University Mathematics, Geometry, Matrices and Multivariate Calculus, Foundations of Pure Mathematics, and Probability and Data Science. They also select optional modules such as Mathematical Investigation Skills or Mathematical Modelling and may take Languages for All modules to broaden their skills. The second year deepens understanding with core modules in Linear Algebra and Advanced Calculus, Analysis, Statistical Inference and Modelling, and Differential Equations, while optional modules allow further exploration of pure, applied, and statistical mathematics through topics such as algebraic structures, special relativity, and stochastic modelling. In the third year, students focus on their preferred pathway, choosing from pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or probability and statistics, with examples including Metric Spaces and Measure Theory, Mathematical Biology, and Bayesian Statistics and Generalised Linear Models. Students can also complete the Mathematics and Statistics Project and Skills module and select additional optional modules such as financial mathematics, machine learning, knot theory, or operations research. The program combines rigorous theoretical training with practical application, developing analytical, problem-solving, and research skills that prepare graduates for diverse academic and professional careers.
