COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics and Philosophy BSc is structured over three years to provide a progressive and integrated study of mathematical theory and philosophical inquiry. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in both disciplines through core mathematics modules such as Introduction to University Mathematics, Foundations of Pure Mathematics, and Geometry, Matrices and Multivariate Calculus, alongside philosophy modules including Writing Philosophy and Reason and Argument. Students also select one optional module to explore additional topics in mathematics or philosophy, ranging from probability and data science to ethics and the history of philosophy. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced concepts and applications, with core modules such as Formal Logic, Knowing and Being, Linear Algebra, and Advanced Calculus. Optional modules allow further specialization in areas like stochastic modelling, differential equations, political philosophy, or the philosophy of AI and robotics, enabling students to deepen their understanding and apply logical reasoning to complex problems. The third year emphasizes independent project work and advanced study, with a core project module that develops practical research and analytical skills. Students can further tailor their learning through optional modules in subjects such as financial mathematics, time series analysis, machine learning, phenomenology, and ethics, combining rigorous mathematical reasoning with philosophical reflection. This structure equips graduates with strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills applicable to diverse careers in academia, finance, technology, and research.
