COURSE CURRICULUM

The Financial Mathematics BSc at Sheffield combines rigorous mathematical training with applied economics or management studies to prepare students for careers in finance. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in mathematics through core modules covering topics such as probability, data science, calculus, and linear algebra, while choosing either an economics or management pathway. The economics pathway introduces microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis, while the management pathway focuses on financial management and management accounting. In the second year, students advance their mathematical skills and apply them to more complex problems, studying linear algebra, advanced calculus, statistical inference, and stochastic modelling, alongside further specialised modules in their chosen pathway. Economics students explore intermediate microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, while management students study corporate finance, financial management, and asset pricing. In the final year, students focus on advanced financial mathematics, stochastic processes, and time series, while selecting optional modules from either pathway to tailor their degree to their interests. Optional topics include advanced economics, modern finance, financial derivatives, medical statistics, sampling theory, machine learning, and operations research. The degree equips students with strong quantitative and analytical skills, practical knowledge of finance, and the ability to apply mathematical methods to real-world financial challenges, preparing them for careers in banking, investment, risk management, and related fields.
