COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Science BSc at Sheffield provides a thorough understanding of the processes shaping Earth’s ecosystems and environments, combining scientific knowledge with practical skills. In the first year, students study core topics such as conservation, ecology, environmental sustainability, biogeochemical cycles, and physical geography, while developing essential research abilities through tutorials, fieldwork, and laboratory and computer practicals. Core modules include Earth, Wind, Ice and Fire, Biodiversity, Climate and Conservation, Global Biogeochemical Cycles, Critical Inquiry, Physical Geography and Environmental Science in the Field, and Maps and Stats. In the second year, students build on these foundations, focusing on observing, monitoring, and analysing different environments, while enhancing their research skills. Core modules include Environmental Pollution and Quality, GIS, Earth Observation and Data Analysis, Environmental Science Research Design and Fieldwork, and Principles of Ecology and Conservation. Students can also select optional modules in areas such as sustainable development, climate systems, ecosystems, social justice, and glacial processes to tailor their studies. In the third year, students undertake independent research for a dissertation, further specialise through optional modules, and develop professional skills. Core modules include Professional Skills for Environmental Science and the Dissertation for Geography and Environmental Science. Graduates gain expertise in both scientific analysis and environmental problem-solving, preparing them for careers in research, consultancy, conservation, policy, and sustainability.
