COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Science BSc at Sussex provides a comprehensive foundation in human biology, combining molecular, cellular, physiological, and neurological knowledge with hands-on laboratory experience. In the first year, students develop essential biological and professional skills, exploring how genes control life, how cells function, and how evolution shapes organisms, while covering topics such as immune responses, proteins, epigenetics, microbial diversity, and antibiotic resistance. Core modules include experimental and professional skills, building blocks of life, diversity of life, and fundamentals of physiology and neuroscience, introducing reproductive physiology, the gastrointestinal system, motor control, and sleep and circadian rhythms. In the second year, students deepen their expertise through core modules in advanced professional skills and experimental skills in cell biology and pharmacology, while choosing optional modules in human anatomy, neuroscience, neuropharmacology, molecular genetics, microbiology, and stem cell biology. The course emphasizes practical skills, including the use of the statistical programming language R and mini group research projects. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project, which may focus on laboratory work, anatomy, clinical applications, bioinformatics, science communication, or education. Optional modules allow further specialization in areas such as sensory neuroscience, neurodegeneration, pharmacology, immunology, physiology, reproductive biology, and forensic anatomy, equipping graduates with the expertise and practical experience for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, diagnostics, and biotechnology.
