COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences BSc at Sussex offers a flexible, research-led program that allows students to tailor their studies to individual interests and career goals. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in biology, covering genetics, evolution, cellular processes, immune responses, microbial diversity, and biochemistry, while developing essential laboratory and professional skills, including experimental design, microscopy, data analysis, and career planning. Students select a pathway that guides their study focus, including organisms and environment, form, function and behaviour, mammalian molecular biosciences, or molecular bioscience of animals and plants. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through specialist modules aligned with their chosen route. The organisms and environment route emphasizes biodiversity, ecology, conservation, and field-based learning, while the molecular biosciences route focuses on cell biology, genetics, microbiology, evolution, and biochemistry. Students also develop statistical and computational skills using R and gain practical research experience through mini group projects. In the third year, students undertake an independent research project in their chosen area, applying theoretical knowledge and practical skills to laboratory, field, bioinformatics, or science communication projects. Optional modules in the final year allow further specialisation, covering topics such as evolutionary genetics, physiology, immunology, neurobiology, conservation, and sustainable solutions. The program equips graduates with a strong scientific foundation, practical expertise, and transferable skills for research, healthcare, environmental management, biotechnology, or further study.
