COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry BSc at Sussex offers a comprehensive program combining core scientific knowledge with practical laboratory experience, allowing students to explore life at the molecular level. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in biology and biochemistry, covering topics such as gene control, evolution, cell function, protein structure, immune responses, microbial diversity, epigenetics, and antibiotic resistance. Essential laboratory and professional skills are developed, including microscopy, experimental design, data analysis, CV development, and job application preparation. Core modules include Experimental Skills for Bioscientists, Professional Skills for Bioscientists, Building Blocks of Life, Diversity of Life, and Introduction to Biochemistry, alongside optional modules tailored to individual interests. In the second year, students delve deeper into biochemistry with modules on bioenergetics, molecular structures, and synthesis, while choosing specialist modules in areas such as pharmacology, genomics, sustainability, microbiology, or neuroscience. Statistical programming with R and mini-group research projects further develop analytical and practical skills. The final year focuses on an independent research project in a chosen area, ranging from laboratory-based studies to bioinformatics, science communication, or education, accompanied by optional modules including immunology, molecular genetics, disease biology, neurodegeneration, and microbial ecology. This integrated approach equips graduates with advanced knowledge, research experience, and transferable skills, preparing them for careers in research, biotechnology, healthcare, or further study.
