COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music BMus is a flexible and comprehensive three-year program designed to develop both practical and academic skills in music while providing a global perspective on musical practice. In the first year, students study core modules such as Music in a Global Context, Digital Skills for Music, History of Western Music, and Psychological Foundations of Music, which provide foundational knowledge in music theory, history, and psychology. Students can also choose optional modules in areas such as composition, performance, popular music studies, and music analysis, allowing them to explore personal interests. The second year continues to build core skills with modules like Musicology, Studio Practice, Psychology for Musicians, and Work in Music, while optional modules offer opportunities to study topics such as jazz, contemporary music, ethnography, improvisation, and composition techniques. In the third year, students undertake a major project, which may take the form of a composition, performance, dissertation, or special project, alongside 80 credits of optional modules tailored to their interests. These options include minor projects, orchestration, ensemble performance, traditional music, sound and moving image, advanced musicology, music psychology, and community engagement. The program emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, research, and professional skills, equipping graduates with expertise and versatility for careers in performance, composition, education, research, and the wider music industry.
