COURSE CURRICULUM

The Speech and Language Therapy BMedSci provides a structured and comprehensive pathway to becoming a qualified speech and language therapist, combining theoretical knowledge with practical clinical experience. In the first year, students build foundational skills through core modules such as SLT Professional Practice 1, SLT Biomedical Science, and SLT Introduction to Practical Linguistics, alongside modules on speech, language, and communication development in children and language cognition in adults. These modules establish a strong understanding of communication, literacy, and the cognitive processes underlying speech and language. In the second year, students deepen their clinical and scientific knowledge through modules such as Developmental Differences in Speech, Language and Communication, Key Clinical Topics 1, Language Cognition and Communication in Adults 2, Speech and Hearing Science, and Language Analysis, while also gaining advanced research skills through the Research Methods and Statistics module. The third year focuses on professional readiness and independent practice, with core modules including Key Clinical Topics 2, Professional Practice 3, Transition to Professional Autonomy, and Evaluating the Evidence Base in Speech and Language Therapy through principles, methods, and a clinical dissertation. Across all years, the program emphasizes evidence-based practice, ethical decision-making, and patient-centred care, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to work across healthcare, educational, and community settings, making a meaningful impact on individuals with communication and swallowing difficulties.
