COURSE CURRICULUM

The Orthoptics BMedSci is a three-year program designed to prepare students for a professional career in the assessment and management of eye conditions, approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). In the first year, students establish a strong foundation through core modules including Participation and Society, Clinical Orthoptics, Optics, Strabismus and Ocular Motility I, and Anatomy and Physiology, developing essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The second year builds on this foundation, with a focus on advanced strabismus and ocular motility, clinical orthoptic practice, and the application of optical principles in visual optics. Students also study ocular diseases, research methods, and statistical analysis, while gaining hands-on experience through clinical placements that integrate theoretical knowledge with practical patient care. Core modules include Strabismus and Ocular Motility II, Clinical Orthoptics II, Visual Optics, Clinical Visual Optics, and Disease and Research. In the third year, students deepen their expertise in complex visual disorders, including neurological conditions affecting vision, and continue clinical placements to consolidate practical skills. They also study medicines that qualified orthoptists can supply and undertake an independent research project, developing data collection, analytical, and evidence-based decision-making skills. Throughout the program, students gain the clinical competence, professional knowledge, and research skills necessary to provide high-quality orthoptic care and make a meaningful impact in eye health services.
