COURSE CURRICULUM

The General Engineering BEng (Hons) degree at Sheffield provides a comprehensive foundation in engineering principles while allowing students to specialise in their chosen field in the final year. In the first year, students develop core knowledge across a range of engineering disciplines, covering fundamental topics such as electrical engineering, process engineering, thermofluids, materials science, engineering mathematics, programming, and statics. Hands-on projects and the Global Engineering Challenge Week help students apply theoretical concepts in practical contexts, fostering problem-solving and teamwork skills. In the second year, students build on this foundation with more advanced study, including electromechanical energy transformation, thermal and fluid engineering, systems and control, mechanical behaviour of materials, mechanics of structures, and further general engineering mathematics. Practical and project-based learning continues to play a key role, enabling students to refine their design and analytical skills in preparation for specialisation. In the third year, students select a specialism from a wide range of options including aerospace, chemical, civil, electrical, energy and sustainability, materials, mechanical, medical technologies, control and systems, software, or general engineering. This year focuses on advanced technical knowledge, professional skills, and independent research through an individual investigative project. Additional modules in accounting and law for engineers provide essential contextual understanding, equipping graduates with the technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and professional readiness needed for a career in modern engineering.
