COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computer Science (Software Engineering) BEng degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of software development, combining technical knowledge with practical and professional skills. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in core computer science topics, including software engineering principles, Java programming, algorithms, data structures, systems, networks, and an introduction to artificial intelligence, alongside reflective skills to support personal and academic development. In the second year, the focus expands to more advanced concepts, including programming language principles, databases, logic, cybersecurity, automata and computation, software development practices, and applied artificial intelligence, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges. The course emphasizes hands-on learning through collaborative projects, enhancing skills in problem-solving, coding, testing, and project management. In the third year, students undertake a Dissertation Project and an Advanced Software Engineering module, providing the opportunity to design, develop, and evaluate complex software systems. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies, exploring areas such as machine learning, robotics, natural language processing, cryptography, bioinspired computing, and theoretical foundations of computer science. By combining rigorous technical training with opportunities for specialization and practical application, graduates gain the skills and experience needed for careers in software engineering, IT consultancy, software development, or further research in computing.
