COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemical Engineering BEng at Sussex provides a comprehensive education in the design, operation, and optimisation of chemical processes used to produce fuels, medicines, plastics, food, and advanced materials. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in chemical engineering principles, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, mathematics, and fundamental sciences, alongside professional skills development and interdisciplinary problem-solving exercises. The second year deepens understanding through core topics such as mass transfer, separation processes, reaction engineering, process control, and applied thermodynamics, while introducing data-driven engineering, experimental investigation, and the use of machine learning with industrial-scale facilities. A week-long design project and group work enhance teamwork, communication, and practical problem-solving skills. In the third year, students focus on advanced process design, transport phenomena, reaction kinetics, and systems for sustainability, including life cycle analysis and circular economy principles. The capstone process design project integrates technical knowledge, safety, economic, and environmental considerations, challenging students with real-world industrial problems. Optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as energy engineering, environmental engineering, biopharmaceutical manufacturing, and fuels and energy. Throughout the course, students develop the technical, analytical, and professional skills needed to pursue careers in chemical, pharmaceutical, energy, and materials industries, preparing them to address complex engineering challenges with innovative and sustainable solutions.
