COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Engineering BEng at Sussex provides a comprehensive education in engineering and life sciences, equipping students with the skills to develop innovative medical technologies. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through modules such as Biomedical Materials and the Human Body, Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, Engineering System Modelling and Analysis, and Introduction to Electric and Electronic Circuits, alongside mathematics and engineering fundamentals. This year also includes practical and collaborative experiences such as the Global Engineering Challenge Week. In the second year, students deepen their expertise with core modules including Systems Engineering Mathematics II, Advanced Bioengineering Topics, Biomaterials II, and Introduction to Programming and Problem Solving, while optional modules allow them to explore areas such as control systems, mechanical properties, pharmaceutical engineering, medical imaging, and cell and molecular biology. The third year focuses on advanced study and research skills, with core modules including the Bioengineering Research Project, Managing Engineering Projects and Teams, Accounting and Law for Engineers, and Scientific Writing. Optional modules provide opportunities to specialise in areas such as tissue engineering, biomedical instrumentation, biopharmaceutical manufacturing, biomechatronics, medical device design, robotics, and computational methods. Across all three years, students develop problem-solving, technical, analytical, and professional skills, preparing them for careers in medical technology, healthcare innovation, research and development, or further postgraduate study in biomedical engineering and related fields.
