COURSE CURRICULUM

The Aerospace Engineering BEng at Sussex offers a progressive and hands-on approach to developing expertise in aircraft design, materials, systems, and aeromechanics. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules in aerospace design, avionic systems and control, aerospace materials, aeromechanics, mathematics, and electrical fundamentals, establishing the essential technical knowledge required for later study. In the second year, learning advances through deeper exploration of avionics, electrical energy, aeromechanics, and aerospace materials, complemented by an embedded mathematics curriculum. Students also undertake a year-long design project, designing, manufacturing, and flight-testing a quadcopter in the first semester and a rocket in the second, incorporating coding and altimeter programming, which develops practical engineering and problem-solving skills. In the third year, students engage with aircraft design in collaborative group projects, applying simulation and flight data analysis using advanced simulators. Core modules include aero propulsion, covering jet engines, rockets, ramjets, and advanced thermodynamic cycles, while optional modules allow specialization in areas such as space systems engineering, spacecraft design, composite and advanced materials manufacturing, communication electronics, aerodynamic design, and structural vibrations. The program culminates in an individual investigative project, giving students the opportunity to explore a chosen aerospace topic in depth. This combination of theoretical study, practical design, and research experience equips graduates with the technical, analytical, and collaborative skills needed for a career in aerospace engineering or further study in advanced aerospace topics.
