COURSE CURRICULUM

The Dental Surgery BDS program offers a progressive and integrated approach to dental education, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience. In the first year, students are introduced to the structure and function of the human body and the oral cavity, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and renal systems, alongside common diseases affecting the head, neck, teeth, and mouth. Students also begin visiting dental clinics and learn about their role within the dental team. In the second year, the focus shifts to biological principles across the lifespan, including growth, development, ageing, and nutrition, while students start performing basic dental procedures in simulation suites and clinical skills environments, and begin treating patients following completion of the Basic Oral and Dental Care module. By the third year, students develop the ability to treat patients holistically, understanding systemic diseases and their impact on dental practice, while performing more advanced clinical procedures requiring high manual dexterity. In the final two years, students manage increasingly complex cases across all age groups, studying oral disease, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Clinical placements in Sheffield and the surrounding region provide real-world experience, and elective opportunities allow students to explore specific interests, preparing them to become competent, skilled, and reflective dental practitioners.
