COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music and Modern Languages & Cultures BA is a four-year interdisciplinary program that combines practical and theoretical study of music with the study of one or two modern languages and their associated cultures. In the first year, students develop core skills through modules such as Digital Skills for Music and History of Western Music, while selecting language modules tailored to their experience and interests, ranging from French, German, Spanish, Russian, Dutch, Portuguese, Catalan, or beginner Chinese. Optional modules allow further exploration in areas such as composition, performance, music analysis, popular music, psychology of music, and cultural studies. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge in both music and language through core modules like Musicology, Work in Music, Arts of Persuasion, and continued language study, with optional modules including performance and improvisation, jazz and contemporary music, translation, and language and gender. The third year offers the opportunity for study abroad, providing immersive cultural and linguistic experience to enhance fluency and intercultural understanding. In the fourth year, students consolidate their expertise through a minor project in composition or performance, advanced language study, and optional modules in areas such as sound and moving image, traditional music, migration studies, and global careers in languages. The program equips graduates with strong linguistic skills, musical proficiency, cultural literacy, and transferable analytical, creative, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in music, education, translation, and international or cultural industries.
