COURSE CURRICULUM

The Modern Languages and Cultures BA is structured over four years to provide a comprehensive and immersive study of languages and their associated cultures. In the first year, students select two core language modules at a level appropriate to their experience, paired with corresponding culture modules that explore the histories and societies of the countries where the languages are spoken. Optional modules allow further exploration of topics such as European identity, professional language use, and historical studies, with the opportunity to take additional Languages for All modules. In the second year, students continue to develop linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding through core modules in literature and arts, while advancing in their chosen languages. Optional modules provide opportunities to study topics such as translation, language and identity, and historical perspectives. The third year is typically spent abroad, immersing students in the language and culture of their chosen region, fostering practical communication skills, independence, and intercultural awareness. In the fourth year, students consolidate their expertise through a final project in languages and cultures and advanced language modules, while optional modules allow exploration of areas such as global careers in languages, multilingualism, migration, and cultural studies. The program develops fluency, cultural literacy, critical thinking, and transferable skills, preparing graduates for careers in international business, education, diplomacy, media, and other fields requiring advanced language and intercultural competence.
