COURSE CURRICULUM

The Linguistics and Modern Languages & Cultures BA is structured over four years to provide a progressive and integrated study of language theory and applied language skills. In the first year, students take core modules in linguistics, such as Sounds and Structures of English and Style in Language, alongside core modules in one chosen modern language and its associated cultural studies. They also select optional modules in linguistics or modern languages and cultures, with students studying Chinese or Korean following an East Asian Studies stream with distinct optional modules. The first year emphasizes foundational knowledge in both areas while allowing exploration of interests through optional modules. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through core modules such as Phonetics, Language Acquisition, and continued language study, while optional modules allow further specialization in areas like Historical Linguistics, Syntax, Phonology, and Sociolinguistics. The third year is typically spent abroad for immersive language and cultural experience, except for East Asian Studies students where this is optional. In the final year, students focus on advanced study and independent research, completing a research project alongside advanced modules in linguistics, language acquisition, TESOL, or language and society. Overall, the program develops analytical, research, and practical language skills, combining theoretical insight with cultural competence to prepare students for careers in linguistics, translation, education, and international contexts.
