COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Modern Languages & Cultures BA provides an integrated study of history and language, helping students develop historical understanding, linguistic skills, and cultural awareness. In the first year, students focus on building core academic skills in history through modules such as History Workshop and Thinking Historically, while also beginning study in a modern language, selecting from options including French, German, Dutch, Russian, Czech, Spanish, Catalan, or Portuguese. Optional modules allow students to explore a broad range of historical topics and develop a sense of the areas they may wish to specialise in later. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge with core history modules such as Arts of Persuasion and Parchment to Pixels, alongside continued language study, and can choose optional modules spanning topics like Eastern African history, translation, and languages of gender and sexuality. The third year is spent abroad, fully immersing students in the language, culture, and society of their chosen language, enhancing both linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding. In the final year, students focus on advanced language study and undertake a project in languages and cultures, while further optional modules allow exploration of historical and cultural topics such as Renaissance Italy, colonial histories, and modern social change. The degree develops strong research, analytical, and intercultural skills, preparing graduates for careers in international organisations, cultural institutions, education, and research.
