COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Sciences BA provides a broad and interdisciplinary approach to understanding society, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to address complex social issues. In the first year, students build a foundation through core modules such as Foundations of Social Science 1 and 2, Reading Social Science, and Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics, while exploring optional topics like World Politics, Criminology, Sociology, Human Geography, and Social Inequalities. This combination introduces students to key theories, concepts, and research methods across social science disciplines. The second year develops these skills further, with core modules in Doing Quantitative Research, Doing Qualitative Research, Mixed Methods Research, and Employability and Engagement, providing advanced training in research design, data collection, analysis, and professional practice. Students can also choose optional modules to deepen their knowledge in areas such as Politics, Sociology, Criminology, Human Geography, or Journalism, allowing them to tailor their studies to their interests. In the third year, students focus on independent research and practical application, completing a major research project or dissertation that demonstrates their ability to analyse, interpret, and communicate findings to diverse audiences. Throughout the degree, emphasis is placed on critical thinking, collaboration, and ethical engagement, preparing graduates for careers in research, policy, community development, media, or further academic study.
