COURSE CURRICULUM

The Journalism Studies BA at Sheffield is designed to develop both practical skills and theoretical understanding, preparing students for a career in modern journalism. In the first year, students build core journalistic skills, learning to research, gather, structure, and present information effectively. Modules focus on news production, reporting, media ethics, and understanding the relationship between press, politics, and society, with workshops simulating newsroom environments to provide hands-on experience. In the second year, students advance their skills by exploring journalism theory, media freedom, and ethical reporting in a global context. They develop expertise in media law, court reporting restrictions, and in-depth storytelling, alongside practical broadcast production. Optional modules allow specialization in areas such as sports journalism, public relations, or reporting on justice. Passing the Media Law for Journalists module is required to progress to the final year. In the third year, students consolidate their knowledge and practice, applying investigative techniques and producing content across multiple platforms. Core modules focus on creating editorial brands, understanding audiences, and strategic content production, while optional modules offer further specialization in advanced news and broadcast journalism or digital activism. The course culminates in a portfolio or dissertation, equipping graduates with the skills, versatility, and professional awareness needed to succeed in the evolving media industry.
