COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Sociology BA provides an interdisciplinary study of past and present societies, combining historical analysis with sociological theory and research. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules including History Workshop, Thinking Historically, Doing Social Research, Introduction to Social Theory, and Theories of Society, while optional modules allow exploration of early modern Europe, archaeology, and global history. In the second year, students deepen their understanding with core modules such as History and the Public and Solidarity: Politics, Law, and Society across the Globe, alongside further optional modules in history and sociology. These include contemporary historical events, revolutions, global politics, social change, crime, media, family, health, migration, and policy studies, providing opportunities to apply theoretical and methodological approaches to real-world issues. In the third year, students consolidate their learning by undertaking a short dissertation and core modules like Sociology in the Social World, while optional modules allow specialization in both disciplines. History options include topics such as British social change, colonial encounters, and global conflicts, while sociology options cover areas such as digital identities, protest movements, welfare, human rights, AI, and social justice. The degree develops strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, equipping students for careers in research, policy, social services, and related fields.
