COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography and Planning BA provides a comprehensive understanding of human geography and urban planning, equipping students to address social, economic, and environmental challenges in urban contexts. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through core modules that explore development, planning, and the role of the state, human geographies, urban design, and the making of urban places, alongside global challenges and environmental issues. This year also focuses on building research, analytical, and practical skills to study cities and communities. In the second year, students expand their expertise with core modules in real estate, planning and development, urban analytics, urban theory, and human geography research design and fieldwork. Optional modules allow exploration of topics such as urban design, culture, sustainable development, housing, social justice, and urban conflict, enabling students to tailor their studies to specific interests. The third year emphasises independent research and applied knowledge, with core modules on environmental justice, future cities, and a dissertation project. Optional modules provide further specialisation in planning law, development management, urban infrastructures, and creative approaches to urban studies. Throughout the course, students develop critical thinking, quantitative and qualitative research skills, and an understanding of how planning and geography shape communities, preparing them for careers in urban planning, policy, environmental management, and related fields addressing contemporary urban challenges.
