COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature BA at Sheffield provides a comprehensive study of literature across historical periods, from the early modern era to contemporary writing, integrating critical and creative approaches. In the first year, students take four core modules including Renaissance to Revolution: Early Modern Literature, Writing Revolutions: Restoration to Romanticism, Contemporary Literature, and Reading Theatre and Film, which introduce foundational skills in literary analysis, contextual understanding, and critical thinking. Optional modules allow students to explore a diverse range of topics such as hybrid literary forms, medieval literature, classical sources, and creative writing, while additional flexibility permits the selection of up to 40 credits from modules outside English. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge with core modules like Romanticism to Modernism and Literature and Critical Thought, further developing research skills and critical engagement with texts. Optional modules offer specialisation opportunities in areas such as creative writing, Shakespeare, and applied literary studies. In the third year, students consolidate their expertise through core research projects, applying analytical and interpretive skills to independent study. Optional modules in the final year allow exploration of topics such as film and theatre, modern crises, and Renaissance literature. Graduates gain advanced analytical, research, and communication skills, equipping them for careers in education, publishing, media, and the creative industries.
