COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language and Linguistics BA at Sheffield provides a comprehensive study of language, combining theoretical, historical, social, and applied approaches. In the first year, students take four core modules covering key areas of linguistics, including sounds and structures of English, style in language, linguistic theory, and the history of English, which provide a solid foundation across formal, social, acquisition, and historical perspectives. Embedded research methods develop analytical skills from the start. Students also have the flexibility to select optional linguistics modules such as early English, living Englishes, or language and creativity, and can explore up to 40 credits of modules from outside the English discipline to broaden their academic experience. In the second year, students build on this foundation with core modules in phonetics, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, and language acquisition, gaining practical skills and deeper insight into language structure and variation. Optional modules allow further exploration in areas such as syntax, phonology, or Old English. The third year focuses on consolidating expertise through two research projects that provide hands-on experience in linguistic analysis and independent investigation. Additional optional modules enable study of topics like the psychology of language, language and social justice, and constructed languages. Graduates develop strong research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in education, language research, communication, or further study in linguistics and related fields.
