COURSE CURRICULUM

The English and Modern Languages & Cultures BA offers an in-depth exploration of language, literature, and culture through a combination of English studies and modern foreign language learning. In the first year, students take core English modules such as Renaissance to Revolution and Writing Revolutions, alongside core Modern Languages and Cultures modules in a chosen language such as French, German, Spanish, or Russian. Optional modules allow exploration of creative writing, film, and cultural studies. In the second year, students build on their foundational knowledge, developing analytical, linguistic, and critical skills through modules like Arts of Persuasion, Romanticism to Modernism, and continued language study. Optional subjects may include translation, gender and language, and the politics of art. The third year is spent abroad, immersing students in the language and culture of their chosen country, providing invaluable experience and fluency. In the final year, students complete an independent research project while advancing their literary and linguistic expertise. They can choose from modules such as Renaissance Literature, Fin de siècle Gothic, Migration and its Representations, and Language and the Self. The course equips graduates with strong communication, analytical, and intercultural skills ideal for global careers in education, translation, culture, and international relations.
