COURSE CURRICULUM

The English and History BA degree allows students to explore the rich relationship between literature, language, and historical contexts. In the first year, students choose between two English pathways—Literature or Language—each offering core and optional modules that introduce key concepts and texts. The English Literature pathway covers topics such as early modern literature, romanticism, and contemporary writing, while the Language pathway focuses on linguistics, phonetics, and the development of English. Alongside English, students study core History modules such as History Workshop and Thinking Historically, with options exploring archaeology, early modern Europe, and empire. The flexible structure also allows students to take modules from other arts and humanities subjects. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through modules like Romanticism to Modernism, Sociolinguistics, and History and the Public, while developing analytical and research skills. The final year focuses on independent research through a dissertation or project, allowing students to specialise in areas such as Renaissance literature, language psychology, or medieval and modern history. By combining literary and historical study, the degree develops strong critical thinking, writing, and interpretive skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, media, publishing, heritage, or further academic study.
