COURSE CURRICULUM

The Economics and Politics BA is a dual honours degree that equips students with the analytical tools and knowledge to understand the interaction between economic and political systems. In the first year, students develop a foundation in economics through core modules in microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis, alongside mathematical methods tailored to their prior experience. Political studies introduce key concepts, research methods, and analytical approaches, while optional modules allow exploration of topics such as British politics, global political economy, gender politics, world politics, and Western political thought. In the second year, students build on these foundations with intermediate economics modules, including applied microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, and econometrics, alongside advanced political analysis and empirical research skills. Optional modules offer the chance to investigate comparative politics, autocracies and democracies, migration, Chinese politics, and issues of oppression. The final year focuses on specialist knowledge in applied economics and independent research in politics, enabling students to complete a politics research project. Core modules cover economic policy and practice, while optional modules allow further study in international trade, environmental economics, poverty and inequality, political economy, global culture wars, political leadership, armed conflict, and corporate influence in global politics. This integrated curriculum prepares graduates for careers in policy, government, research, consultancy, and international organisations, providing the skills to analyse and influence complex socio-economic and political challenges.
