COURSE CURRICULUM

The Digital Media and Society BA provides a comprehensive understanding of how digital technologies influence society, combining theoretical study with practical skills in research and digital production. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules covering data visualisation, digital media concepts, media and communication, digital research methods, and contemporary digital issues. Optional modules allow exploration of topics such as social inequality, education, and sociological theory, with themed pathways available for students interested in journalism, media and communication, or marketing and consumer society. In the second year, students expand their expertise by studying digital media’s impact on social change, advanced research methods, social research design, and digital storytelling. Optional modules allow further specialisation in areas such as media law, consumer culture, feminism, social policy, and medical sociology. By the third year, students focus on their chosen areas of interest, undertaking a dissertation and having the option of a short placement. They may study specialised topics including digital identities, organised crime, protest movements, privilege, and digital health. Throughout the course, students develop the skills to critically analyse digital phenomena, produce user-focused media content, and apply research methods to real-world challenges. Graduates are prepared for careers in digital media, communication, research, and related fields.
