COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology BA offers a thorough grounding in the study of crime, justice, and social responses to offending, blending theoretical knowledge with practical understanding. In the first year, students are introduced to key concepts through core modules such as comprehending criminology, criminal law and justice, representations of deviance, crime in a global context, and contemporary issues in criminal justice. They also develop essential research skills that underpin their studies. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of core criminological issues while enhancing their research capabilities, exploring topics such as responding to crime, punishment and penal policy, and analysing quantitative and qualitative crime data. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas like race, gender and crime, criminal process, sociology of crime, and advanced criminal law and justice, enabling them to tailor their studies to their interests. The third year focuses on independent research through a dissertation, while core modules like the value of criminology in policy and practice consolidate students’ ability to connect theory with real-world applications. Further optional modules provide opportunities to study subjects such as drugs, crime and control, youth crime, policing in a global context, and theoretical foundations of criminal law. Graduates emerge with critical thinking, research, and analytical skills suited to careers in criminal justice, policy, law enforcement, and research.
