COURSE CURRICULUM

The Architecture BA at Sussex provides a progressive three-year curriculum that develops students’ design skills, technical knowledge, and understanding of architectural contexts. In the first year, students build a foundation in architectural design and communication, environmental technologies, and humanities, gaining essential skills in drawing, representation, and the theoretical underpinnings of architecture. Year two advances these skills, focusing on the conventions of architectural and landscape representation while deepening students’ understanding of key histories, theories, philosophies, and methodologies in architecture. Core modules continue to emphasize design communication, environmental technologies, and humanities, enabling students to integrate conceptual knowledge with practical skills. In the final year, students refine their abilities to implement architectural technologies, environmental design, and construction methods, learning to integrate these elements into coherent design solutions. They also develop competence in producing a full design brief and corresponding proposal, considering the needs of potential users and responding to real-world design challenges. Throughout the program, students gain expertise in technical, environmental, and cultural aspects of architecture, combining creative problem-solving with practical and professional knowledge. The course prepares graduates for further professional training, postgraduate study, or careers in architecture, equipping them with the skills to produce innovative, socially aware, and technically proficient architectural designs.
