COURSE CURRICULUM

The MusM in Music with a focus on Ethnomusicology provides students with an in-depth understanding of world music cultures, combining theoretical study with practical research skills. Core units such as Studying World Music Cultures: Themes and Debates and Fieldwork and Ethnography equip students with the conceptual frameworks and methodological tools needed to investigate music in diverse cultural contexts. Advanced Music Studies units develop analytical and research skills, including the use of digital tools to study musical phenomena. Students also undertake a dissertation or critical edition, allowing them to design and execute an independent research project that contributes to ethnomusicological scholarship. Optional units, including Popular Music and Identity, Advanced Analysis, Advanced Orchestration, Historical and Editorial Skills, and Historical & Contemporary Performance, enable students to tailor their studies to specific interests, whether in performance, music history, analysis, or applied research. The program emphasizes hands-on experience, encouraging practical engagement with music through transcription, fieldwork, and performance-based projects. By combining critical study, practical skills, and independent research, the MusM prepares graduates for advanced research, doctoral study, or professional roles in cultural organisations, education, and music-related initiatives. Students leave with the ability to critically analyse, document, and interpret music across global contexts, supported by rigorous methodological and analytical training.
