COURSE CURRICULUM

The MusB Music program at Manchester provides a comprehensive and flexible pathway for students to develop their skills in performance, composition, and musicology. In the first year, students build a strong foundation with core units such as Tonality: Form and Harmony, Sonic Invention, Approaches to Musicology, and Music and Its Contexts, alongside solo performance training. Optional modules allow further exploration of tonal theory, harmony techniques, and musical notation. In the second year, students can focus on more specialized areas, including advanced composition in fixed, electroacoustic, and interactive media formats, instrumental and vocal composition, harmony and counterpoint, and music in cultural and digital contexts. Opportunities for solo and ensemble performance also enhance practical musicianship. In the third year, students refine their expertise through advanced analysis, composition portfolios, and dissertation work, while optional modules include aesthetics, advanced musicology studies, composition for film or game audio, recital performance, and culturally focused studies such as Modern Spanish Music. The structure allows students to tailor their degree to individual interests and strengths, fostering creativity and professional readiness. Emphasis on both practical performance and scholarly research ensures graduates develop a well-rounded skill set suitable for careers in performance, composition, music research, education, and other areas of the creative industries, combining traditional music training with modern technological and cultural perspectives.
